Codelco orders $27.5m underground automation system

Copper major makes sizeable investment in technology

Sweden’s Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions says it has included a US$44 million order from major South American copper producer Codelco for underground mining machinery and automation technology in its 2021 Q4 sales.

The division of Stockholm-listed Sandvik AB says a US$27.5m AutoMine Fleet system will be introduced at Codelco’s El Teniente block cave copper mine over 2022 and 2023. The system could be scaled to support up to 32 machines, the manufacturer said.

Chile’s state-owned copper miner is progressing a multi-billion-dollar underground mine development at El Teniente to enable annual production of more than 500,000 tonnes of the red metal for decades.

Sandvik shares were up about 2% early Tuesday. The company’s market value was about US$36.19 billion.
