Hydrogen truck ‘a game changer for us’, Otranto says

Fortescue Metals CEO Dino Otranto says onsite testing of the company’s first large-scale hydrogen-powered haul truck prototype is a “huge milestone” in its partnership with manufacturer, Liebherr.

The vehicle, called Europa, “integrates for the first time a Fortescue Zero battery into a Liebherr haul truck”, Otranto said this week. It has a 1.6 megawatt-hour battery produced by Fortescue WAE, and 500kW of fuel cells. The prototype can hold more than 380kg of liquid hydrogen.

It will undergo site testing at the Christmas Creek iron ore mine over several months.

Fortescue says results of the tests will “shape the company’s future zero-emission haul truck fleet”.

Europa will be fuelled with liquid hydrogen from Fortescue’s Christmas Creek gaseous and liquid hydrogen plant.

“To decarbonise mining you need a system solution, so this new operating system, which integrates a fleet management system and energy management, will be a game changer for us in reducing our carbon emissions,” Otranto said.

The project is part of Fortescue’s efforts to eliminate scope 1 and 2 emissions at its Australian iron ore operations by 2030.
