Sandvik says deliveries on a US$30 million order for underground mining equipment from Zimbabwe’s largest platinum group metals producer started this quarter.

Zimplats has purchased 12 loaders, five trucks, six drills and five bolting units for use at its Ngezi mines complex in the Hartley geological complex on the Zimbabwean Great Dyke.

Sandvik said deliveries would continue into the second quarter of 2026.

“In addition to the equipment order the deal also brings a significant aftermarket value,” it said.

“The Ngezi complex is a major platinum group metals operation that has transitioned from openpit to underground mining, and Zimplats continues to make substantial investments in expanding underground mining capacity at Ngezi.”

Zimplats is 87% owned by Impala Platinum Holdings. The company is in the middle of a 10-year, US$1.8 billion expansion program that includes underground mine development and upgrade projects at Bimha and Mupani.

Zimplats said Mupani development was completed in the FY2025 period “and the mine upgrade remains on schedule, with full production of 3.6 million tonnes per annum and 309,000 6E ounces planned for H1 FY2029”.

The company spent $345 million on capital works in FY25 and $439.5 million the previous year.

“This new Sandvik fleet is a strategic step in enhancing our underground capabilities and ensuring we continue to operate safely, efficiently and sustainably,” said Zimplats CEO Alexander Mhembere.
