Cheaper renewable power “opens up the whole hydrogen economy” to miners and their new-generation heavy vehicles, senior Anglo American executive Tony O’Neill told the audience at a major Australian mining conference this week.

O’Neill, addressing the 2022 AusIMM Open Pit Operators conference virtually from London, said the major’s newly launched hydrogen fuel-cell and battery powered, 290-tonne-payload haul truck was using “green” hydrogen produced at the company’s Mogalakwena platinum group metals mine in South Africa.
