Epiroc has booked a circa-US$15 million order for surface drill rigs from Rio Tinto in Australia.
The Swedish manufacturer said Rio had bought several of its Pit Viper 271 and SmartROC D65 drill rigs for its Pilbara iron ore operations. The former will be retrofitted by Rio Tinto with autonomous capabilities.
Epiroc said the mining major also placed big orders for Pit Viper 271s in the March quarter this year, and in 2021. The rigs are manufactured in Texas, USA.
The SmartROC units are produced at Epiroc’s factory in Orebro, Sweden.
