Planet Positive initiative ‘exceeded our expectations’: Metso

Finnish minerals and aggregates equipment manufacturer Metso Outotec wants sales of its growing “Planet Positive” product lines to outpace overall business expansion after the segment contributed more than 25% of its €5.3 billion FY22 revenues.

More energy or water efficient Planet Positive equipment, technologies and services – ranging from improved thickeners, filters and crushers, to a lighter mine dump truck tray – generated a reported €1.34 billion of sales in the year to December 31, 2022, up significantly on €886 million the previous year.

Group sales surged 25% in 2022, despite Metso Outotec’s exit from Russia.

It wants to grow Planet Positive sales at least 3% faster than overall sales.

“We have over 100 products that are more energy and/or water efficient than the industry benchmark, help our customers cut their CO2 emissions and achieve other sustainability priorities,” Metso Outotec CEO Pekka Vauramo said in the company’s latest annual report.

“In 2022 we launched close to 30 products in our Planet Positive portfolio.

“These included new technologies, adapting existing offerings for new customer segments, as well as updating existing product families.

“To continue this growth, we target that 100% of our R&D project spend is for projects with sustainability targets [up from 99.7% in 2022].”

Metso Outotec says minerals processing and metals refining consume about 5% of the world’s total annual power use with energy-intensive rock comminution and processing plant and equipment.

“Our Planet Positive approach, launched in 2020, has exceeded our expectations,” Vauramo said.
