Sumitomo, Toyota focus on mass cathode output

Japan’s Sumitomo Metal Mining Co and Toyota Motor Corporation say they will collaborate on ways to mass produce cathode materials for all-solid-state batteries ahead of Toyota’s planned market launch of electric vehicles with the batteries in the next three years.

Sumitomo and Toyota have been doing joint research on cathode materials since 2021 and say they have used the former’s proprietary powder synthesis technology to produce “highly durable cathode material” for all-solid-state batteries.

“All-solid-state batteries, which are primarily composed of a cathode, anode, and solid electrolyte, are a next-generation battery technology that offers the potential for smaller size, higher output, and longer life compared to current liquid-based batteries that use electrolyte solutions,” the companies said in a statement.

“When used in BEVs, all-solid-state batteries are expected to deliver enhanced performance, such as longer driving range, shorter charging times and higher output.”
