Epiroc wins large drill order for lithium mine

Epiroc will start delivery of 14 of its SmartROC D65 surface production drill rigs to the Pilgangoora lithium mine in Western Australia this month.

The hard-rock mine is owned and operated by ASX-listed Pilbara Minerals.

Swedish manufacturer Epiroc says it will also sell spare parts for the drill rigs.

Machine deliveries are expected to run through to early 2025.

“Lithium plays an increasingly important role as the world keeps transitioning to electrification to reduce emissions, including producing more hybrid and electric vehicles,” Epiroc CEO Helena Hedblom said.

“We are happy to support Pilbara Minerals to optimise its operation.”

Epiroc said earlier this year it would work with London-listed drilling and mining contractor Capital to field test a battery-electric version of the diesel-powered SmartROC D65 during 2024.

The manufacturer said at the time demand for zero emission or low emission equipment was high, “as the world is pushing to transition from fossil-fuel-driven equipment to sustainably powered rigs”.
