Caterpillar’s unspecified investment in California lithium-ion battery manufacturer, Lithos Energy, is expected to help the latter expand production and work with Caterpillar on its battery-electric construction and mining vehicle program.
Founded by former Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) engineers James Meredith (above right) and Erik Stafl in 2015, Lithos is said to currently produce 48-to-800-volt battery packs.
“We look forward to working with Caterpillar on battery pack development and manufacturing for their electrified product portfolio,” they said this week.
Caterpillar showed off four electric construction machine prototypes, including new batteries, at last year’s bauma event in Munich, Germany, and also recently demonstrated its first battery-electric ultra-class mining truck in Arizona, USA.
