Copper major Southern Peru Copper Corporation has ordered US$115 million worth of Metso solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW) equipment for its $1.8 billion Tia Maria project in Arequipa, Peru.

The greenfields Tia Maria project, aiming to produce 120,000 tonnes a year of copper cathodes from later this decade, is part of a $10.3 billion Southern Peru Copper Corporation investment plan for its copper mining and smelting assets in Peru.

Finland manufacturer Metso says it has already completed basic engineering for Tia Maria, where it will supply VSF solvent extraction and electrowinning plants, including dual media filters, a robotic cathode stripping machine and acid mist capture system to reduce environmental impact. Site advisory services and commissioning and start-up spare parts are also included in Metso’s contract scope.

The company says it has delivered more than 30 solvent extraction plants and 20 electrowinning plants to copper industry customers worldwide since the 1990s.
