Swedish manufacturer Sandvik has reported winning a circa-US$180 million order from BHP to supply more mining equipment in 2028 and 2029 to the $10 billion Jansen underground potash operation in Saskatchewan, Canada.
It follows Sandvik’s announcement of a $216 million equipment sale to Jansen early in 2022.
In Swedish kronor, the Jansen Stage 1 order was worth SEK2 billion and the new Stage 2 project sale is cSEK1.9 billion.
Sandvik said the new equipment included potash continuous mining systems. It had been collaborating with BHP for several years to develop the underground mining equipment.
“We are very pleased to continue our partnership with BHP and look forward to further strengthen our collaboration with the supply of our high-performing mining solutions for Stage 2 of the Jansen project,” Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions president Mats Eriksson said.
BHP says Jansen S1 is expected to produce about 4.35 million tonnes of potash per annum.
First ore production is scheduled for 2027, with the total construction and ramp-up period put at eight years.
